Award-Winning Design: Recognizing Excellence

The innovative design of the Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus has earned CEC Austin and their partners three prestigious awards:

These accolades reflect the outstanding efforts made by the project team to deliver an exceptional hospital campus that will serve the Austin community for years to come.

CEC Austin’s Role in the Project

CEC Austin served as the civil engineer of record on the Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus, providing expertise in key areas such as surveying, grading, drainage, utilities, site design, erosion control, water quality, and stormwater management.

Leading the project was Russ Tomer, Principal at CEC Austin, who led a team of eight. The design process began in 2020, during a time of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but CEC Austin quickly adapted to the changing circumstances.

Overcoming Challenges with Collaboration, Innovation

One of the key strategies that contributed to the project’s success was the use of pull planning, a collaborative approach that helped streamline the design and construction phases. Pull planning involves working backward from the project’s final completion goal to create a comprehensive timeline, ensuring that all team members were aligned and accountable for their roles.

“Pull planning is a great way to ensure that everyone is on the same page and identifies project needs along the way,” said Russ. “It creates accountability and helps us stay focused on our goals, even when faced with challenges.”

With the onset of the pandemic, the project team quickly adapted to remote collaboration, utilizing Zoom for meetings and Mural for pull planning coordination between teams. This flexibility proved invaluable in maintaining momentum and fostering a cohesive team environment throughout the project.

A Lasting Impact on the Community

As Russ noted, “The ownership was very invested in the design, and the whole team was involved in the planning, including the general contractor.” The thoughtful design of the Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus reflects the shared commitment to creating a lasting, positive impact on the community.

“It’s thoughtful design, inside and out, and it feels great to be part of such a positive impact on the community,” he aded.

The completion of the Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus marks a significant milestone in Austin’s healthcare landscape, and CEC Austin’s involvement in this groundbreaking project is a testament to their expertise, teamwork, and dedication to delivering exceptional engineering solutions.
