CEC's Timeline 35 YEARS
Our History
In April 1989 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) was founded by four individuals — Jim Roberts, Jim Nairn, Ken Miller, and Greg Quatchak — who pioneered the value proposition that an employee-owned firm focused on its clients and employees could provide a noticeably higher level of service than its competitors.
CEC’s initial focus centered on client acquisition and project development. The firm quickly grew to a team of 25 full-time employees and established its initial four practices (Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Sciences, Waste Management, and Water Resources) within the first year. CEC also solidified its business principles that prioritize comprehensive integrated services, engaged senior personnel, and strong personal business relationships with clients.
Throughout the first five full years of operation, CEC remained committed to consistent growth by opening its first office outside of Pittsburgh in Cincinnati, Ohio, and adding its Ecological Sciences Practice. Now, CEC has offices nationwide and has expanded its services to nine practice areas. Dustin Kuhlman, P.E., took the reins in 2022 as the firm’s first non-founder Chief Executive Officer.
As an ever-expanding firm, CEC works hard to maintain an employee-centered culture that provides a strong foundation for exceptional client service, growth, innovation, and employee development. Simultaneously, CEC remains focused on the future by purposefully evolving operations to meet the needs of new markets, as well as the changing needs of the clients, communities, and businesses that it serves.
