CEC Experts Host 2024 Solid Waste Webinar Series

August 23, 2024

This summer, CEC hosted six free webinars as part of our annual Solid Waste Webinar Series. The series ran from July through August and provided nearly 1,000 attendees with an opportunity to earn continuing education contact hours while listening to our experts explain subjects impacting today’s solid waste operations. Clients from companies nationwide were invited to attend these one-hour webinars.

Air Quality – Latest Developments
Presented by Jennifer Flannery
July 16, 2024
This session provided an overview of existing landfill regulations, focused on the latest developments in applicable regulations and enforcement initiatives, and highlighted both the recently promulgated and/or proposed regulations that may affect landfill in the coming years.

Facility Siting Challenges (GIS)
Presented by Jeff Shepherd, P.E.
July 23, 2024
Siting a municipal solid waste facility is difficult based on the required setbacks indicated in location criteria. This session will utilized GIS and the regulations from a particular state to show how potential sites can be found using overlay maps.

Environmental Justice and the Solid Waste Industry
Presented by Donald Cobb, P.G.
July 30, 2024
In recent years, environmental justice has received increased focus from state and federal regulators but remains something of a black box for industry. This session offered a measure of clarity on how environmental justice requirements impact the solid waste industry, starting with the initial screening process and following through to more in-depth reporting and public engagement requirements.

Landfill Design and Ops Issues
Presented by Adam Mehevec, P.E. and Amy Knight, P.E.
August 6, 2024
This session evaluated two design aspects unique to landfill final covers. We discussed the use of synthetic turf materials as the top surface of the final cover and how this type of system can be superior to traditional covers in areas where vegetation is difficult to establish, as well as the use of waste settlement calculations to determine the optimal top deck slope for the landfill.

Elevated Temperatures in Landfills and Geomembrane Liner Performance
Presented by Zahirul Islam, Ph.D., P.E., P.Eng.
August 13, 2024
The generation of heat in landfills is a complex process due to the heterogeneity of the waste stream coming into the landfills. High heat or elevated temperature could potentially damage the landfill liner system, landfill final cover system, and landfill gas collection system. This session described the heat generation mechanisms, observed elevated temperatures in some landfills, and evaluated the performance of geomembrane liners due to the observed elevated temperatures.

PFAS / Leachate Treatment
Presented by Greg Werner, P.E. and Ivan Cooper, P.E., BCEE
August 20, 2024
This session tracked the regulatory changes, development of treatment technologies, common problems and solutions, and best practices for managing landfill leachate. We also discussed discharge permit changes, leachate and PFAS treatment effectiveness and state of maturity, CAPEX and OPEX scenarios, and considerations for accepting wastewater biosolids.
